If you are in French 2 in 2017/18 and will be coming back to French 3 in August (youpi !), see below for a plan of attack to keep your French skills fresh and flowing over the vacation.
1. Watch Le Tour de France ! The 7th to the 29th of July "La Grande Boucle" will be happening, and it's worth watching at least in part to see the beautiful images of France. Usually it's on NBC Sports channel from around 5:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. (use your DVR, if you can, so you can sleep late and then fast-forward through the commercials). You don't need to focus on the bike race itself, unless you want to. What I want you to see are the incredible helicopter shots of France, the cute little villages, the impressive castles, the ancient structures, the amazing landscapes, and the entertaining people (especially the Tour fans in the mountain stages - they are nuts!). The first day and the last day are the most interesting in terms of spectacle and all. The last day is in Paris, and they go around and around the center of the city for the last ten kilometers (on cobblestones!). It's a great chance to get a glimpse of the country. You can also get on letour.fr and get details about each day's race results in French or English, along with videos and interviews of the riders. I will be talking about the race in the fall, so it will help if you have watched at least a couple of days of it.
2. Watch YouTube in French! The main channels I want you to watch are Français Authentique (with Johan) and Français avec Pierre. Both of them have accurate subtitles on their videos and transcripts available from their websites (for free). They both discuss subjects of use to French learners (grammar, culture, history, expressions, pronunciation, and even personal development, Johan's favorite topic). They both speak slowly and clearly, using correct French but in a very conversational style. I also like Comme une Française (with Geraldine), but most of her videos are in English with just a few expressions in French. She's helpful with learning about the culture, though. I have found dozens of other channels, as well, but you should look for subjects that you like, just put the search terms in French. For example, I like watching art lessons, but I watch French ones. So, I'm practicing my French while exploring my hobbies and interests. That's important!
3. Read in French! There are so many websites in French, you can easily find interesting content to explore on a regular basis written in French. Besides the many news channels, French magazines all have websites, and there are sites for comic books, too. I will come back and add a few links to this post, so please stand by for that...
